Oils, fats and butters
Illipe butter
About this illustration
A forest nut becomes a firm butter that can help make a portable care bar. Illipe’s story follows fallen fruit, careful drying and pressing—and then the less visible craft of making a plant fat behave well in a finished product.
A quick answer
Shorea Stenoptera Seed Butter is the seed-derived plant fat commonly called illipe butter or tengkawang fat. It has recognised conditioning and emollient functions. It is distinct from a tree resin or wood extract, and different grades can have different preparation and crystallisation characteristics.
A Bornean tree behind a short ingredient name
Kew now recognises the tree as Rubroshorea stenoptera, with Shorea stenoptera as a connected older name. It records the species as a wet-tropical tree native to Borneo. The cosmetic ingredient retains Shorea Stenoptera in its label identity.
This is a good example of botanical references and cosmetic names moving on different tracks. The change does not require a reader to relearn the ingredient. It simply helps connect the plant account with the older wording still found in Seed Butter.
The harvest can begin when ripe nuts fall
Forestwise describes collecting ripe illipe nuts from the forest floor in its supply route. It then softens the hard shells in a river-stream soaking step before opening them. The kernels inside are the useful starting material for the butter.
That gives the origin story a clear physical sequence. A forest tree produces a protected seed; people collect the fallen fruit and reach the inner material. This is the supplier’s documented process, rather than a claim that every illipe grade is collected or prepared in the same way.
Sun drying comes before pressing
In the same producer’s route, the opened seeds are dried in the sun for several days before transport to its processing unit. Expeller pressing and vacuum filtration then produce a raw butter. The route is a combination of harvesting knowledge and controlled processing.
The seed does not become a cosmetic ingredient merely because it has been collected. Drying, separation, pressing and preparation all belong to the journey. Following those stages makes a pale block of butter more interesting: it carries a material history that the final texture alone does not show.
Crude and refined are different presentation choices
Forestwise describes crude, decolourised and refined preparations in its material literature. O&3 separately lists a refined grade as off-white to light tan with a neutral aroma. The butter’s broad identity therefore does not dictate a single appearance or odour.
This is useful when a brand shows a raw nut but the product is a pale, smoothly finished bar. Preparation can change sensory properties while retaining the seed-fat origin. The actual grade should guide an accurate description of colour, texture and any sourcing claim.
A firm butter has a crystallisation story
Plant fats can form different crystal arrangements as they cool. AAK explains that its specially prepared illipe grade uses interesterification to modify the melting profile and crystallisation behaviour. It is a particular processed material, rather than a claim about all illipe butter.
The practical point is delightful in its simplicity: a smooth swipe can require thought about how a fat sets. A maker is working with cooling and texture as well as a plant ingredient. Two butters with the same general origin can therefore need different handling in formulation.
Softening and structure can meet in one material
The ingredient inventory lists conditioning and emollient functions for Shorea Stenoptera Seed Butter. Supplier material also describes illipe as a firm butter with structuring applications. This combination helps explain its interest for concentrated balms and sticks.
A care bar needs to be usable in the hand and pleasant during application. The fatty material can contribute to both the body of the product and its emollient character, alongside the rest of the blend. That is more informative than describing every plant butter with the same vague nourishing language.
A massage bar gives the story a familiar gesture
Lush lists illipe butter in its Deep Sleep massage bar together with cocoa butter, shea butter, oils and other ingredients. This is an actual solid product designed to glide across skin. It makes the link between firm fat and a useful application format easy to picture.
The label establishes the butter’s inclusion, rather than proving that illipe itself produces the product’s advertised sleep result. For understanding this ingredient, the more useful connection is physical: a seed-derived butter can be part of a blend that holds its shape and spreads during use.
Questions you might have
Is illipe butter made from the tree’s resin?
No. The ingredient name specifies Seed Butter, and producer accounts follow the nuts and kernels into pressing. Resin would be another plant material with another preparation. Keep the final words attached to the botanical name so the tree’s different possible materials do not become confused.
Why can two illipe butters look or behave differently?
Suppliers offer different grades, including crude, decolourised, refined and specially processed preparations. AAK describes modifying one grade’s crystallisation behaviour. The exact material and handling therefore matter, rather than expecting every butter with the same general plant name to set identically.
Does the ingredient name prove a forest-conservation claim?
It identifies the material, not the whole supply chain. A producer can document collection and processing relationships, but a cosmetic maker needs traceability for its own grade before making a sourcing or conservation claim. Specific producer information is more useful than a general rainforest image.
One useful thought
Follow the fallen nut through drying and pressing, then notice the craft of setting a smooth fat. Illipe combines a forest origin with a very practical solid-cosmetic material story.
